Quit Blogs

Star in Quitline's new ads

Hi bloggers

We're looking for people who have quit smoking with the help of Quitline to take part in our new advertising campaign.

We're looking for all different kinds of people. Shooting will take place in early March in the Wellington region so it would be ideal (but not essential!) if you were living in the area.

To register your interest, please email Sarah Woods: sarahw@quit.org.nz
It would be very helpful if you could include some information about yourself and your quitting journey.

Many thanks!

I,m now 197 days smokefree feels great dont feel like a leper when out socialising, but will admit there are times when I get tempted to pick it up again but tell myself why would I want to go back down that track again when I found those first couple of weeks so hard
Well hope you all have a great safe& healthy smokefree xmas also a wonderful New Year
Cheers to you all

just jag16 December, 2010

Hi Grandma 7, you are nearly at 200. I remember when you first came on here, doesn't seem so long ago but you are way over 6 months. Well done.
Yes I still have to tell myself I don't want to go down that track again. I suppose after 50 years of smoking the thoughts and memories are not going to disappear but they don't hurt so much as time goes by.
Have a great smokefree Christmas.

What Next !!!!

Heard on news this morning that over in the UK they are thinking of making people clock in & out on their smoko breaks. Is it because they are not working or what & what about the non smokers do they have to do the same even though they are not smoking, makes you wonder if the same ruling will be put into place here in NZ sure sounds like more of a nanny state than ever, What Next???

Weight to go

Well here I am 4 plus months down the track of being smoke free & enjoying it
Now comes another challenge is to lose the 4kg I have put on since giving up I didnt worry about it at the start, not until I went to try some of my summer clothes from last year on only to find out that nothing fitted or was so tight its not a good look, not only that I put on a brand new pair of 3/4 pants that I bought 3 weeks ago only & already have popped the dome arrrr!
Think this is going to be just a big a challenge as going smokefree but will take it one day at a time
Hope to lose at least 5kg by Christmas which isnt very far away if not its a good excuse to buy new clothes can now afford them seeing as I have given up the nicodemon
Wish me luck in my new challenge will keep you up to date on weight lose hopefully!!

just jag11 October, 2010

Hi grandma 7, I wish you lots of luck and please tell us how! My willpower went with the cigarettes, my get up and go got up and went but I still would love to get rid of all the kilos I have gained. It's a pity Quitline can't give us patches to get rid of the food cravings!!!

grandma 711 October, 2010

Hi just jag
Dont worry this is not going to be a walk in the park for me so have gone to the pharmacy & joined a weight loss programme but also have to keep up the walking going to a gym is not on my agenda as I have a few problems with my back
Yeah totally agree with your comment about Quitline, they should have a site called how to Fight the Flab after you give up

pukeko11 October, 2010

Go grandma7.....we will support you ...I am just waiting for all my blood tests etc..to come back...then I can hit the pavement with you!!! We can become the quitline smoke/FAT free club hahahahahahahaha xx Great stuff hahahaha

DAY 71

WOW!!! Cant believe I have got this far without caving in, not that I wasn,t tempted mind you it would have been so easy
The journey has been a trial of ups & downs highs & lows like a roller coaster sometimes even feel like I have been riding on one
Have dragged out the knitting needles to keep the hands busy but sometimes the mind isnt quite with it example have had to pull apart what I had done not once but 4 times & that was just about doing my head in & times like that I would have lit the dreaded nicodemon through sheer frustration but wouldnt let it beat me this time, but as you say onwards & upwards
The journey hasnt been an easy one but well worth the challenge

Question

Not sure if when we finish step 1 patches are we entitled to steps 2& 3 through the quitline
If any of the longer bloggers can answer this question I would appreciate it

Quitline1 January, 1970

At the Quitline we do not recommend the weaning down process from Step 1 to Step 3 as it has been found that it is more successful to stay on the same level and during this time changing those habits and routines to stay a non smoker for the future. There are three parts to the smoking addiction - chemical, habitual and emotional and the patches deal with the chemical only. If a client feels that they do need more nicotine support we are happy to do this for them to support them in their quitting.

Re eclipse mints or breathfreshners

Would like to know where this person who told jaxb thet eclipse breath freshners cause cancer & have they got any proof to back up this claim I,m sure if that was the case they would have been withdrawn from the market
My own son has eaten these for a number of years & he is in his 30s & so far hasn,t had any form of cancer that I know of as for eating barley sugars wouldn,t they be more of a health risk like putting on weight as a lot of us have been doing no matter what we chew on, best we stick to fruit & raw veges
Anyway all you bloggers happy smoke free week, we are all doing great

Hi jonosmo

If you look at one of my previous blogs I also have not coughed up the gunk that some of the bloggers talk about dam wonder as I have smoked for 46 years
Hope someone can give us an answer, not that I,m looking forward to coughing up gunk lol!!
It may happen yet good to know that you can get it off your chest, but will say my breathing is way better & I dont get puffed out as quick when I go for a walk which has,nt been happening a lot lately due to the wet weather
Anyway good luck with getting an answer to your question be interesting

Quitline1 January, 1970

Hi grandma 7,

Some people find they cough up 'gunk' after quitting. As the lungs repair themselves, they will get to a point when they can effectively clean themselves out again. This is temporary and it is a good thing, because you're getting rid of it! However, don't worry if you don't experience this, not everyone does. Your lungs will still be recovering nicely.

Keep up the great work!

Week 4

Well have surprised myself have made it only a couple of days short of my first month
What makes it easier is that hubby is also giving up as well he is a week ahead of me but he never says anything about the cravings unlike me they are still there but seem to be getting less each week so hang in there you newbies it does get better
Really enjoy reading all the fantastic blogs knowing I,m not the only one feeling a bit lost, weather doesnt help with being wet most days cant get out for a decent walk with the dog or get into the garden which is going to be full of weeds by the time the weather comes right, oh well it will give me something to do for a few hours at least
Hope you all have a another great week of being smoke free you are all doing great !!

Week 2

Well here I am into week 2 all going fine but now have mouth ulcers & feel like something stuck in my throat, am off to doctors this week so will get it checked out
Cravings still there but not so bad still having zyban along with patches
Read all the blogs sure that is keeping me sane lol!
Would be interested to know if anyone else has had mouth ulcers while giving up the dreaded nicodemon
Good luck to all the starters out there it is worth it no doubt you have read all the good things eg smell better, breath better & more energy

Week One

Hi to you all
Well I have survived week one now into my second week, cravings are still a big part of me, tried the lozenges but did not like them so have stuck with the patches also use eclipse mints which work for me & they,re sugar free
Had some moments where I could have murdered a fag but resisted temptation, moods get quite bad at times sure husband glad to go back to work after weekend with me
Know the family 100% behind me which is a huge help dont want to let them down now that I have got this far or myself for that matter
Taking one day at a time

Day One

This is my first with the patch on, a week ago I started on zyban & can honestly this worked for me I cut down from 25 to 3 in a week, had my final puff last night & threw out the last ashtray
Today I had some huge cravings but just drank water, but know this is part of the deal I have to bear for along time yet
Not looking forward to the weird dreams though, will wear patch to bed tonight & see what happens
Anyway like I said '' If you can do it so can I''
Will keep on blogging to let you know how I,m progressing each week
