Quit Blogs

Star in Quitline's new ads

Hi bloggers

We're looking for people who have quit smoking with the help of Quitline to take part in our new advertising campaign.

We're looking for all different kinds of people. Shooting will take place in early March in the Wellington region so it would be ideal (but not essential!) if you were living in the area.

To register your interest, please email Sarah Woods: sarahw@quit.org.nz
It would be very helpful if you could include some information about yourself and your quitting journey.

Many thanks!

Day 75

Hi Everyone...

It's been awhile since I've come on here and posted, thought I'd stop in and say hi.

Today is day 75 for me, still havent had a puff, and for the most part it's been pretty easy. There are those odd moments where I feel like a ciggy, but I know that if I had that "1" smoke, it wouldnt be worth it.. it wouldnt taste the way I remember it, it wouldnt make me feel the way that I want it to... so whats the point right? exactly, there's no point.

I love being smoke free... I love being a non smoker...

...stay strong everyone... never let your guard down.

xx

Dentarthurdent15 November, 2010

Nice to see you back Bella. Great stuff on your 75 days.
I have those moments too sometimes when I think about having a smoke, usually it's when I with my mates as most of them smoke and I wonder whether I should have one to be sociable. I worry that I might like the taste again or enjoy it so know I can never have just "one".
It's great being a non smoker though, well done and be proud of how far you've come so far.

Day 21

Whoop Whoop.. three weeks and feeling great...

I went out in the weekend.. this was the decider... was I strong enough to stay smoke free on a night out drinking?!!!. Well guess what?? I did it.. I had a great time and didnt find myself obsessing about smoking all night.. it hardly crossed my mind. I'm buzzing... I now know I'm done with smoking... not another puff for as long as I live, a decision I'm sticking with.

Stay strong everyone x

mandykoo22 September, 2010

That is so fantastic, Bella!!!

I wasn't able to trust myself to be strong enough for about two months to drink and be around smokers.

It is the sure decider about how committed a person is, and you passed it!!! Well done.

Dentarthurdent22 September, 2010

Nice work Bella. Congratulations on your 21 days. I found myself quite nervous with the first time drinking after I had quit. Thought for sure I was going to fail at that point. Once you get passed it, you know you can tackle anything.

pukeko22 September, 2010

WOW O WOW...great stuff you!!! Great inspiration for us all !! Well done you11

Day 15

Hi All,

The Good: Day 15.. Yay.. loving each day I can count as another day of being a non smoker.

The Bad: The broken sleep from the quakes is getting to me.. woke to all 3 aftershocks lastnight. Gosh.. and work is full on because our CHC office closed for all of lastweek. I'm sooo tired. Come on mother nature.. give us cantabs an un-interupted sleep please.

The Now: Stay positive, keep strong, and dont forget why were doing this...

chrissie3416 September, 2010

Well done Bella*!!! I know what you mean about sleep i also felt all 3 and am feeling rather shattered today!! Oh i wish mother nature would stop shaking us to bits!!!!!!!!!

Day 13

Hi All..

The things I've noticed *so far* being a non smoker:

- Some days are easier than others "today being a good day".
- I feel fitter, and can breathe easier when I workout.
- I smell good which makes me feel cleaner (weird, but true lol).
- I'm more sensitive to smells (not sure if this is a good thing lol).
- I have more energy.
- I have more money.
- People are supporting me, not waiting for me to fail.

For the last 2 years I really hated smoking.. smoking was no longer *normal* in society (anyone else notice this?)... I was even embarrassed to admit that I smoked when meeting new people. I'm sooo relieved this is no longer something I have to deal with.

Keep up the good work everyone.. we deserve to win this battle.

minty fresh14 September, 2010

FANTASTIC Bella!!!! You're getting it! The benefits of quitting far outweigh the cravings - and it only gets better. Well done Bella. ☺

rabbit14 September, 2010

well done i have tried to quit on more then 1 occasion. i would'nt know what the benefits of being smoke free cause at the moment i am trying to give up. best luck with staying smoke free

Captinhook14 September, 2010

Awesome stuff Bella! I so know what you mean about being a smoker in todays society - why i don't smoke in public unless out at a pub etc! Hated the looks I got from non smokers thinking to myself yes your right I shouldn't smoke etc etc. looking forward to the day which will be soon that I too no longer have that stigma to deal with!

Keep up the good fight! xx

Dentarthurdent15 September, 2010

Nice Bella. I find keeping those positives at the front of my mind helps me to focus on why I am quitting when it does get a little rough. You lose all those things by lighting up again.

chrissie3415 September, 2010

Well done Bella!!!!!!!!!!

clarence the cat15 September, 2010

Good on you Bella. Like you, I am determined and already I can see some positives. No ducking round corners out of the weather to "Puff & Blow" is the big one for me. Also I dont have to feel like an outcast anymore. Its only 14 days for me but I am sure this will get easier as we go along

Bella*15 September, 2010

Thanks guys.... I don't think I would get through this quite the same without coming on here and reading everyones stories. Blogging helps so much, then the support is unreal.. Thanks for being you x

You can do it rabbit.. I never thought I could.. but here I am. You've got it in you.. and after days you'll notice the difference. Like minty said "it outweighs the cravings".

Hey clarence, I'm on 14 days too.. we're doing awesome.. and YAY we're not outcasts anymore :)

Day 12

Hi All,

Made it to day 12... whew.

I live in Christchurch. I somehow managed to survive the stress of the earthquake and with stand the erge to smoke... if I can get through that.. I can get through anything.

Poppy13 September, 2010

Well done Bella*
I dont think I could get through one earthquake let alone the 493 that Christchurch has had, without smoking.
You are doing great!!!!
Keep it up

horlicks13 September, 2010

Hi Bella, well done!! Keep up the positive attitude, you can do it!!!

Debz3013 September, 2010

Well done to you! I wish I could say the same, I dont think it helped that my partner had started again about a week beforehand, I was weak and his cigs were the first thing I grabbed at 4.35am.......im now back to full time smoking, but I will do it again :)

pukeko13 September, 2010

Cor well done yep you sure can ...when the time is right ,,...amazing...!! You are amazing!!

Bella*13 September, 2010

Thanks guys.. it's good to back on here. I havent logged on since the day before the earthquake.. but I was thinking of you all.

Don't worry Debz.. this is a stressful time so I completely understand where your coming from.. and if I had cigs available to me straight after the earthquake hit, I reckon I wouldve been puffing at 4.35am too.

Day 2

Goodmorning all..

Well its break time at work.. it's so strange not picking up my cigi's and lighter and going outside for a puff.. found myself thinking.. Hmmm is there something I'm meant to be doing right now?? lol... I guess I'll have alot more free time now :)

I'm still waiting for this "incredible" urge to smoke... Ive had a few moments where Ive felt like one.. but not the "dying need" I thought I'd feel. I know it's early days.. but I'm feeling great.. hoping it lasts.

Thanks for all your comments.. you help more than you know. x

minty fresh3 September, 2010

Well done Bella - enjoying being a non smoker is a huge part of quitting - learning to breathe properly again and take life at a more relaxed pace. I found the following thing and thought I'd add it as extra incentive:-

Taken from http://www.stop-smoking-tips.com/benefits-quitting-smoking.html

* After 20 minutes - Smoking causes increase in blood pressure. This high blood pressure is very harmful as it increases the danger of heart attack. But as soon as we quit smoking the risk minimizes and blood pressure rate becomes normal.
* After 8 hours - Nicotine and carbon monoxide levels in the blood are greatly reduced; oxygen levels in the blood return to normal. The chances of a heart attack start to fall.
* After 10 hours - Carbon monoxide (CO) level becomes half after 10 hours of quitting smoking. Carbon monoxide is one of the major pollutants that produce bad effects on cognitive skills and health. It also affects the oxygen, which is one of the most vital substances, which are necessary for survival. When the carbon monoxide level is high, it decreases intake of blood from lungs, which can lead to many serious problems. We increase our energy levels by smoothing the passage of oxygen as we restrict the carbon monoxide level by quitting smoking.
* After 24 hours - If you successfully completed 24 hours, it is a marvelous starting, for the chain smokers that provides them strong bearing power, less level of tiredness after exercise and quick recovery.
* After 48 Hours - When move to 48 hours from one whole day, it gives us a totally new experience as nicotine is removed from their body, which earlier has resulted in bad side effects by causing stomachache, vomiting and it also develops the probability of hypothermia.
* After 72 hours - Bronchial tubes begin to relax; energy levels increase. Breathing becomes easier.
* After 2-22 weeks - After 2 to 22 weeks of quitting smoking you will get rid of bad circulation and also of numerous other disorders like slow cold feet, skin healing, peripheral vascular disease (PVT), and Raynaud’s disease.
* After 1 year - After you quit smoking for 1 year, you will reduce the risk of heart attack to half.
* After 10 years - After reducing the danger of heart attack our good habit of quitting smoking results in minimizing the danger of lung cancer to half.
* After 15 years - After 15 years person who once was chain smoker leads a healthy life as a normal man who has never smoked. At last the good habit has repaid back.

Well done again Bella - keep on blogging. ☺

Marie2 September, 2010

Bella, welcome to your new quitting family, Congrats on taking the first steps. I am day 72 and never in a million years would I have thought that I could do this. I've been smoking for a very long time and now feel so much better and want to face my older years with a new sence of purpose.
There is a saying "that with age comes wisdom." Why weren't we given this wisdom when we were children??? None of us would be fighting this fight now !!!! Gotta laugh or you will drive your self silly.
Stay positive Bella!
