Want to become a Quitcard Provider?

If you are interested in helping people quit smoking, you may want to become a Quitcard Provider. This means you can distribute Quitcards for subsidised nicotine patches, gum and lozenges. To be a Quitcard Provider you must be smokefree, and must fall under one of the following groups:

  • Specialist stop smoking practitioners who have completed the Stop Smoking Practitioners’ Programme.
  • People who are eligible to undertake, and complete, the Ministry of Health’s Helping people to stop smoking e-learning, specifically:
    • Health professionals regulated under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003, excluding pharmacists (see below)
    • Medical students (3rd year and above)
    • Nursing students (3rd year and above)

Can Pharmacists become quit card providers?
No. Pharmacists remain unable to become Quitcard providers for the time being. However, the Ministry is currently working on enabling pharmacists to provide subsidised NRT through another mechanism.

PLEASE NOTE: If you are able to prescribe medication to patients you no longer need a Quitcard to prescribe Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT). Instead, you can prescribe NRT as you would any other medication (e.g. by using your prescription pad).

Guide to filling in Quitcards

Use the Guide to NRT Assessment for Quitcard Providers to help you assess your client’s nicotine dependency and addiction level. The guide includes a section on health considerations and an example of how to fill in a Quitcard.

You can download the latest version of the Guide from the Ministry of Health website at The New Zealand Guidelines for Helping People to Stop Smoking

Linking in with Quitline’s services

To support the great face-to-face work you do as a Quitcard provider we recommend that you also let your clients know about Quitline’s support services. There is no reason why a client can’t use our services as well as receiving cessation help from you. In fact, research has shown that people who use a combination of support tools while they quit smoking have higher success rates.

Free quit smoking resources

A range of free quit smoking resources is available to all Quitcard providers. We encourage you to give all clients a copy of The Quit Book to support them on their journey to becoming non-smokers. The Beat the Smoking Addiction Flyer and Want to Quit Smoking? Poster are other useful resources. You can find our more about our resources under Help to Quit > Info Resources
