Only in thailand
The day was exotic and wonderful and not too freaky until......we were at my friends shop which was typically beautiful thai style when along comes bird. Yes bird !!! An unusual name under any circumstances but even more so in a situation where hardly anyone speaks English and I have adopted the thai name "nok" which means bird in thai. So a thai man called bird comes along and he is to be my motorcycle taxi driver. News to be but when in thailand....so I get on the back of the motorbike and we take off. We come to a major highway wit 4 lanes of traffic going each way. When I realise he isn't going to the other side but we are going to go in the opposite direction to everyone else on the 4 lane highway I exclaim "OH MY GOD" he laughs and repeats my sentiments in perfect English "oh my god!!" And that's the only thing he says for the remainder of my journey as he performs each hair raising manoeuvre.
Apparently u have taught "bird" who doesn't speak a word of English to say "Oh my god!" Quite a useful phrase for a motorcycle taXi driver of his calibre.
Happy Wednesday from tuesday
I'm in Oz. It's Tuesday. Happy Wednesday non suckered. I love travelling but not too fond of the travelling part
Flying away in 4 hours
It's an odd journey. 24 hours total counting the time waiting in air ports, but although I arrive 24 hours later it will be 7:30am instead of 1:30 pm.
The good thing about Thailand is there is no gambling whatsoever. In NZ I still get tempted by gambling but I refrain. Smoking and drinking will still be there but I will not let them tempt me. I am going to be staying with my beautiful friend in Thailand. She is younger slimmer and far more beautiful than me. I have some good things about me. I've quit smoking and I'm proud of that. If I drink I will not lose weight so I will refrain from drinking. I am very fat but if I don't drink and get plenty of exercise I will lose weight. At least I will be trying. I will use this as motivation to stay away from alcohol.
As for smoking/vaping no way no how. I'm well and truly over the habit. I'm starting to feel much greater health and vitality there's no way I will go back to the filthy fungluckers. It was smart of me to stop vaping before I left because now I am totally free of nicotine addiction. I still get the odd weak impuse to smoke but my determination to stay free is very strong now.
Take care of Wellington and our fair country while I'm gone. When you're enjoying those fresh breezes think of me sweltering away in the tropical heat. I'll be back next spring. Maybe.
Tehei Mauri ora Tehei te waka
Hello Life (with great enthusiasm)
Hello South Island.
Please excuse me inarticulate attempt at Te reo Maori. I am by no means fluent. I only know a few words but I love the language.
Yesterday was the first of many morning walks. At first I was a struggle and felt like I was dying. Twice I HAD TO stop for a rest. The third time I caught my wind and made it to the very top of the local Maunga. I almost stopped at a spot almost at the top and headed back down. I'm glad I continued to the very top bercause when I got there I could see Kapiti and The South Island that were hidden behind the Porirua hill from the first vantage point.
Walking to the top of that Maunga was a lot like quitting the smokes. At first its really hard. At second its very difficult. After a while it gets a bit easier and when you're standing on top of the Maunga looking at how far you have come it is wonderful.
I'm over 50 and if I don't exercise everyday my fitness goes to the pack but if I exercise everyday I really enjoy it and feel a lot healthier. So it's daily exercise is going to be my new habit. It's going to be easy to find the time over the next 4 months and after that it will be an ingrained habit that will be hard to break except I wont want to break that habit.
I'm going to walk to the top of the local Maunga now and perhaps I will walk to the top of Mt Kaukau this evening to watch the sun go down over Te Waka.
Caio for now. If you're struggling to quit keep at it. It does get easier and once you've got to the top of that Maunga the view is fantastic
2 days to go
I'm trying to stay in bed until noon and go to sleep at 4 am. When I get to Thailand that will be like getting up at 6 am and going to bed at 10 pm. Waking up at 7 am nz time will mean waking up at 1 am thai time. Somsawat is not going to like that.
I have avoided smoking 6900 smokes since I quit. 69 is a lucky number for me today. Lucky I have avoided smoking 100's of cigarettes.
I have decided to adopt a new routine for when I get up in the afternoon /morning. Water with lemon juice, vigorous walk/run, shower, yoga and other exercuse followed by breakfast.
Now that I have quit smoking and all my bad habits it's good to start some good habits. I'm already starting to feel much happier and healthier. Yoga and other regular exercise will help me make the most of my new Smokefree life
Yesterday was my last day of work for four months. Being smoke free and on a four month holiday is a wonderful feeling of a hard won freedom.
I will be keeping myself busy and enjoying every moment. Yoga will be my main form of exercise along with a little bit of Pilates and plenty of walking to get fit for trekking in Nepal.
I will be doing a bit if study and learning Thai to keep my mind active.
I will try to pick up some new musical instruments. I have a plan for that. I have some base tracks on my phone and whenever I encounter a new instrument I will try to play along to the track. When I encounter the right instrument playing it will come naturally and I will purchase one to take with me. When I bring it back yo NZ I'll be the only "one of them" players is NZ. Which will make me the best "one of them" players in NZ.
Needless to say with all these wonderful new activities I will not go back to the filthy fungluckers.
I got to go.
Have a great weekend non-suckers
Shopping in Bangkok
is crazy. Instead of having a shop they have a whole line of shops selling the sane thing. I went to buy a cell phone at the MBK ( don't ask me what that stands for) when I got to the cell phone shop floor there was over 100 booths selling cell phones. Only tourists fresh off the plane with more money than cents pay the first price offered. You get the price from one shop then say "thats a good deal, I'll look around and come back" at which point they will drop the price and throw in freebies then you go to the next shop and tell them what the other guy is offering. I felt sorry for all the people working in such a competitive environment and they are so lovely and friendly so I didn't haggle them too hard.
The quickest type of taxi is the motorbike taxi. A safer alternative and cheapest is a car taxi and they have air con. The absolute cheapest is canal boat but you've got to know your way around to make use if them. The sky train is also fast and cheap. The funniest way to travel is by tuk tuk. Tuk tuk drivers are hustlers if they take you direct to where your going its double or even triple the price of a normal taxi. One way they make money is by offering tourists tours of bangkok for 20 baht (less than a dollar) the tour will always involve stopping at some dodgy ticket agent or a jewelry store or suit shop. The tuk tuk drivers get petroleum vouchers for taking you to the shop and a commission if you buy something. The suit shops can be a good way to get drunk for free if you want to drink as most of them provide free beer but they really pile in the pressure after 3 or 4 beers and no sales. I just tell them I never make any decisions when I am drunk. I've always managed to leave OK when there are other customers in the shop. I don't know what would happen if I was in the shop alone and tried to leave.
Another fascinating aspect of shopping in Bangkok is the way they seem to rent out every available space of footpath leaving enough room for people to pass through. Some areas have two shifts and after one lot of stalls pack up another lot come in and take over.
When haggling if you offer a price that is too low they often say "mai dai! Mai dai!" I thought they were saying they were going to die but no it just means " I can't I can't"
I have my haggle technique Sussex when they offer a price say 50 baht they will say "ha sip baht" you say the price followed by "leerrrr" then offer a lower price so I would say ,"ha sip baht leerrrr, cee sip baht dai mai" they will either say "dai mai" or "mai dai" the trick is to say leerrr with the correct tone as ifbto say you must be out if your mind with that price. I want to do it just for the fun of saying "leerrrr!?!?!?!"
Just thought I'd throw in a shopping blog for the ladies. Hope you find it entertaining as you skive off work on this sunny afternoon (-8
T.F.I.F. Thank Fiona its Friday.
Best Friday ever. Its my last day of work before I go on holiday.
What's up with this freezing cold weather by crikey. I suppose it will get worse before it gets better. One must grin and bear it. I have a particularly wide grin because I know I'm going g somewhere hot very soon.
I'm not taking much clothes with me because I want to buy lots of groovy clothes overseas to bring back with me. Thailand is not the place to buy warm clothes, the coldest it ever gets us 25°-28° Celcius. Nepal will be the place to buy warm clothing.
I will be doing as much yoga as I can to get ready for India. There are a lot of yoga ashram in India and I don't want to show up as a complete beginner. I also need to walk up a hill whenever I can to get ready for trekking in Nepal. I'm only walking to the base camp not the summit but the base camp is higher thawell cook so I will have to get fit. I'm really looking forward to meditating in some very special Buddhist monasteries so I will prepare myself for that also.
When I get back to new Zealand next spring I will be very tanned and healthy with a perfect smile and a very chilled out temperament.
A lot of people have warned me how cheap smokes are overseas. $4 a pack in Thailand and cheaper in India and Nepal. They also have a dizzying array of vapes and flavors at a very cheap price. That's why I quit almost a month before going there.
Another trigger I will face is that my friend smokes. Not a pack a day like I did. She will probably smoke outside and I will probably let her go alone. The last time I had a girlfriend that smoked I let her smoke near me and that did not work out well for me. Even though I kind of like the smell I will act as if I don't like the smell and stay away.
That's enough blah blah from me I better get my to work. So long non suckers. Have a great day.
5 days until oe
Flying to Thailand next Tuesday. I'm looking forward to it so much especially looking forward to seeing my friend Mao (her real name is Somsawat) we have been chatting online a bit and over the last couple of weeks I have cleared the air on a few issues and gotten to know her a lot better. It is going to be a lot better being together now that some issues have been sorted out. There will be nothing we NEED to discuss so we can enjoy each other's company. I'm not like some guys that go to Thailand and get a girlfriend that is 20 or more years younger. Mao has had kids and doesn't want any more which suits me. My nappy changing days are long gone. If things get serious and we decide to marry I won't have to pay sinsot (dowry) because she is not young and she has had kids. Because she is the youngest of many children we will not be solely responsible for taking care of the parents as this is mainly the responsibility of the older children. Mao is a hard worker but in Thailand she earns very little. It will be fantastic for her if I can take her fruit picking with me. She could save the equivalent of a years earnings in a couple of months and it would be great company for me. I love cherry picking and would love to take Mao on a cherry picking working holiday across Australia.
My quit is going well. At first it was like having a bunch of protesters yelling at me to have a smoke. It was very annoying. Now it's like they have stopped yelling but they are still there waving their placards. Easy enough to ignore but I still notice them from time to time. The sugar cravings have gone and so I will focus on sticking to a healthy diet and losing weight. No alcohol no sugar and no binge eating and I should lose weight.
Luxuriating in lateness
I'm lucky that I can start work whenever I like. I was up until 3am talking to people in thailand and india and so I will probably start work at 11 am today.
After work I am having a video conference with my two favourite people. My son and my new daughter in law. I'm looking forward to that. Last time I saw them we went to a newvyears eve dance party in the far north. It was epic fun will do it again next spring/summer until then I will have to make do with video calls
I decided to follow lizzy's advice and not take a sleeping pill. I've known too many frenemies who took too many pills and will go in the opposite direction of their shining example. I will make do with a blindfold and earplugs and I might pay a bit extra for a seat next to the emergency exit so I can stretch out a bit. I just hope I dont have to deal with some fool trying to exit the plane midflight.
My quit is going very well. I feel a lot healthier. Withdrawals have faded away. I dont get sugar cravings. Brain fuzz is gone. Now that i'm not constantly fighting off the urge to smoke my brain has a lot more energy to thinknabout other stuff. Its amazing to be free of nicotine after being addicted my whole adult life. Life is heaps better without the filthy fungluckers.
If youre struggling keep at it quit buddies the rewards are amazing
