Quit Blogs

Star in Quitline's new ads

Hi bloggers

We're looking for people who have quit smoking with the help of Quitline to take part in our new advertising campaign.

We're looking for all different kinds of people. Shooting will take place in early March in the Wellington region so it would be ideal (but not essential!) if you were living in the area.

To register your interest, please email Sarah Woods: sarahw@quit.org.nz
It would be very helpful if you could include some information about yourself and your quitting journey.

Many thanks!

My prescription

says to use the strongest patches for the first 8 weeks, then go down to the medium strength patches for 4 weeks. As the course of patches is supposed to run for 12 weeks how will i manage to do the above and fit in the weakest patches for 4 weeks as well. I don't have to collect my next load of patches before 11th Sept sp shpold i just do 4 weeks on each strength. I also have 2mg gum which i haven't used yet as cravings not out of control.

Hi there Tiggie - sounds confusing doesn't it?? I think that Quitline recommend you follow the course as per your prescription - but it is only a guideline really. They've based your starting strength patch on how many you used to smoke and suggest that the medium strength will cover you for the last four weeks, but is really a personal thing. I started on the medium patches and it was recommended that I stay on the same dose all the way through (it's obviously changed since I quit) but I decided that I wanted to go on a lower dose to wean myself off. So, I telephoned Quitline and arranged for the low dose patch prescription to be sent out. I've also heard of people only doing the patches for a short while and stopping (some are successful but others are not, so I'd be careful about doing that). I'd suggest that you start off as Quitline recommends, the high dose and after say 6 weeks assess it again and perhaps go onto the medium dose, then ring quitline and ask for the low dose for the final few weeks if you're concerned about weaning off the patches.

Start off as you are and see what works for you as you progress Tiggie. You'll know what's right as you move forward. As long as you don't smoke then you're onto a winner. ☺

soooo tired.

My chest was sore when i went to bed last night , almost like trapped air. I couldn't get up this morning. Didn't feel any urges or cravings but was soooo tired. Went back to sleep and got up at 4.30pm. Miss 11 just stayed off school and read/watched tv etc.... i am not going to give myself a hard time about it. School didn't phone to see where she was!!!! When i got up i applied a fresh patch which i am only wearing during the day as i don't need them at night. Feel i am a bit narky but told family to ignore me.... so they have, haha. Any one else get this tired thing and how long is this going to last?

Non smoker as from today

Haven't smoked as from when i got up today. Am using the strongest patches for the first 4 weeks. Have thought about wanting a cig a couple of times today but not anywhere strong enough cravings to do it. I am nearing 40 and am no longer interested in having a sore chest and smelling foul. I am just going to go with the flow for the first few days..... if i need to sleep i will etc.

Well done Tiggie - great to have you aboard. You've made the best decision in your life (your worst - like the rest of us - was to start smoking!). You mentioned a couple of reasons that you'll be glad you ditched smoking:-
sore chest, stale smoke smell here's a couple more...yellow teeth, bad breath, colder hands and feet, bursts of rapid heart rate (which puts a strain on the heart), raised blood pressure, increased chances of blocked arteries (which could lead to limb amputation), valuable time taken away from friends/family, waste of money, dependence on chemicals for emotional state. There are plenty more reasons to chuck the cigarettes away for good....you're too smart to smoke Tiggie. Good luck and keep blogging. ☺
