Quit Blogs

Star in Quitline's new ads

Hi bloggers

We're looking for people who have quit smoking with the help of Quitline to take part in our new advertising campaign.

We're looking for all different kinds of people. Shooting will take place in early March in the Wellington region so it would be ideal (but not essential!) if you were living in the area.

To register your interest, please email Sarah Woods: sarahw@quit.org.nz
It would be very helpful if you could include some information about yourself and your quitting journey.

Many thanks!

Day 4 well 3 and a half

The whole quitting thing is going well I think, the cravings aren't too bad the patches and the gum take the edge and the brain can take care of the rest.

However and its a big however, the lack of sleep is becoming a large problem.

At the moment I am not able to get to sleep until 4 or 5am and thats starting to take its toll after 3 days.

Did anyone else have this problem? Any answers out there would be great I would love to get some more sleep, oh and on that the dreams are very strange and realistic.

Hey Tom.
I had the same thing and really struggled for sleep for a 3-4 days after qutting. I got to a point where I was so tired and frustrated I considered smoking again just so I could get some sleep.
This should settle down shortly but I believe there are some natural remedies you can get from the chemist if you think you might need it.
Or else you can see your GP for something to help you sleep if are concerned.

Sorry forgot to add. My dreams since quitting have gotten a whole lot more vivid than before and I have some really far out sort of ones. I wake up thinking wtf was that all about??? Aliens, talking chipmunks, flesh eating goldfish appearing in the bath, that sort of thing.
Also, I am still having the odd dream about smoking too. I wake up feeling guilty that I have had a smoke until I realise it was just a dream.
Quite normal I'm afraid:)

Hi Tom, I am the opposite, I am sleeping a lot better now that I am not smoking, strange I know. Are you taking your patch off at night, I have heard from some people that when they left it on they had bad nightmares and also had problems sleeping? Good luck, hang in there.

Wow Day 1

Hi all,

After 14 long years I'm kicking the beast, and let me tell you that after the first day the bath tub and a toaster is looking like a good combination, well it was second to water skiing behind the car but couldn't find my tow rope. I have been told that the first 48hrs will be hell but any ideas out there would help.

I guess I've just got to stay positive and know in myself that this is what I want and in the end it will pass, but in my moments of extreme craving I still start running the bath so to speak.

All the best guys and chin up you're doing awesome!!!

Welcome aboard Tom. Yeah the first 48 are hard and I wish I could say to you just do A, B and C and it will be easy but unfortunately that's not the case. There's nothing easy or "Normal" so to speak about quitting. Everyone is slightly different.
Some things that worked for me were just keeping the time frame small. "Forever" just freaked me out so the first week or so was only ever about quitting for an hour at a time.
Follow the 4D's, they really help and don't go too far without a water bottle.
The other thing which worked for me was my list. The main reason for me quitting was my Granddaughters and I found this helpful for when times got tough and I was tempted to smoke again. I could look at a photo or picture them in my mind and it helped me through those ten minutes or so when the cravings were bad.
Have a nosy through some of the blogs here, they really help. Blog when you feel tempted too. This new format is pretty good and usually there is someone not too far away to help out with advice.

hows it Tom! Great to see more dudes get'n off their ass and kicking another butt!!

I'd rather fill the bath tub with vodka before I toss in the toaster, go out laughing, and cremated at the same time.
It'd have to be an outside job cause you'd probably burn for days eh haha
