The Quitline is a free quit smoking telephone help line. Callers can:
- Request a quit pack which has practical quit smoking advice and information.
- Register on the Quitline programme for advice and support.
- Get exchange cards for subsidised nicotine patches or gum where suitable ($5.00 for the first four weeks supply of patches or gum).
Quit Cards
Through the Quit Cards programme, health providers distribute exchange cards for subsidised nicotine patches and gum to people wanting to quit smoking. Any health provider in New Zealand who has trained in smoking cessation may apply to become a Quit Cards provider.
Maori Services
42 percent of Maori are current smokers and a key strategic goal for The Quit Group is to improve quit rates among Maori. Media campaigns and other promotions are developed with the aim of reaching Maori, and Maori Quitline Advisors are available to provide a quality service to Maori clients.
Pacific Services
Just under 27 percent of Pacific peoples living in New Zealand are smokers but this group makes up a relatively small proportion of callers to the Quitline. The Quit Group employs Pacific Advisors and is developing resources and campaigns to reach the Pacific community.
