Feedback on potential ad campaign

Hi everyone,
We're looking at putting a new advert together for our television slots, this time focusing on more of a family theme.
We're looking at giving the cost-focused one a break and brining it back on after GST increases and again in the New Year.
In the meantime, we'd love to know your thoughts on this idea.

Visit youtube to view the draft ad and let us know your thoughts.

Quitting sucks but smoking sucks harder

I hate being irritable and grumpy, especially around the people I love the most. Worse than that is being poor and not affording presents or having the energy to keep up with the kids.

Working out the strategies to distract from the cravings has been really useful. I have mine prioritized so that I can delay, delay, delay as long as possible and then I stop as soon as the cravings are gone.

Keeping busy is my main one. Focusing on what I'm doing is the best answer usually. When that doesn't work I have a glass of water. Sometimes I'm really just thirsty.

If having a drink and getting busy doesn't keep my cravings down I'll do something like have a few deep breaths and remind myself that I will be fit and strong by quitting.

How about you? How do you keep the cravings down? Comment on my blog please. I want to hear your stories...

Hi Michael - mine was YouTube!!! Educating myself on the harms of smoking. I set up a page for us quitters so that I could put a lot of helpful videos in one place - hop over and take a look, see what you think.

http://www.youtube.com/user/SmokefreeNewZealand

I love your strategy about breathing deeply and reminding yourself that you'll be fit and strong by quitting. I found that saying positive comments (or mantras) really helped me stay on track too. Well done Michael and keep on blogging.....who's the geezer who made the first comment???? lol oh it's you!! lol

ooohh no.

I did it. I had a smoke :(

I can't believe it. I don't even know why exactly. Its been in my head all day, and then just before I just got up, and went to the shop, bought a packet and smoked one. It tasted bad, but at the same time, it was great.

I feel terrible, today was day 57.
The worse thing is i'm not sure if i wanna continue my quit. Even at day 57, I can't stop thinking about smokes all the time and how much I want one. I don't wanna be a smoker, but I can't handle being smoke-free either. I feel like my life will just never be as fun as it was.

And the weight gain, I can't handle the weight gain. I'm very particular about my weight and its getting me down.

Not sure what to do now. The pack of now 19 is in my glovebox in the car. Scared that in a few hours I will be venturing back out to the garage for another one.

I just don't know what to do :(

Kinda feel like ringing quitline but don't really wanna talk to anyone over the phone.

Nooooooooooo.

Dear polhigg

Thank you kindly for your blog. Slip ups happen. Please be kind to yourself and go easy. 57 days is a great effort and you can continue if you want too. This will depend on the choices you make from here. You could revisit the reasons why you wanted to stop smoking 57 days ago. Are these reasons still important to you?

Here are some questions that might help to ground you and not react to the many thoughts you probably have:

What benefits or things did you most enjoy about being a non-smoker?

What were your stats i.e. how many smokes have you not smoked, how much money have you saved on smokes?

Was there something about smoking that you missed? How could you replace this as a non-smoker?

Remember there are 3 parts to the addiction of smoking:
• Chemical- cold turkey, nicotine products or alternative therapies.
• Habitual- when did you usually smoke? What have you done to change these routines and break the habit?
• Emotional- why did you smoke? What reasons do you have to stay a non-smoker?

Hopefully you can move forward and trust you’re self that you can continue to do well. Shifting your focus and thinking like a non-smoker is difficult but you have been practicing it for 57 days so you’re obviously good at it.

Please feel free to contact the Quitline if you have any queries and/or would like some support. This is what our advisors are here for to support you in times like these. We can discuss your needs and attend to them as needs be.

Kind regards
Kaanon

Hey Polhigg. I'm sorry to hear you have slipped. If I were you I would be going out to the car and grabbing that packet and binning them quick smart. Too much temptation I think.
Sit back for a moment, think about the reasons you wanted to quit in the first place. These should still be the same. If you haven't already, have a look at Minty's youtube site and have a nosy at some of the vids there, particularly "Thanks tobacco, you killed my Mum".
That's the future of a smoker and I find this video a pretty powerful motivator to not smoke again when I am struggling.
The weight gain is something most of us go through but really is minor considering the effects of smoking. It should be treated as a temporary condition, I would consider lung cancer and the other side effects of smoking much worse.
As you yourself said in an earlier blog, you gotta get up, dust yourself off and start again.

Hi there Polhigg - good advice there from Quitline (after all they've been trained! lol). From a novices point of view I'd say that with the temptation so close to hand, you know that you will go and have another cigarette if it stays as it is. Sometimes we can talk ourselves into smoking a lot easier than we can talk ourselves out of it and with cigarettes right there, we can really convince ourselves that we're going to cave and almost encourage ourselves to do it. You mentioned your weight being an issue and that you don't feel that your life will be fun anymore. I really want you to seiously think about this:-
If you decide to smoke there is a huge chance that you will get some horrible disease that WILL make you lose weight and not be able to gain it back (that's not going to be very attractive)! How much fun IS smoking? What fun are you missing? Is it the holding of a cigarette? The lighting it? The hanging around in all weathers being a slave to it? By quitting smoking it is freeing you from the attachment you have to smoking and the attachment tobacco companies have with you. Do you want to waste your money on tobacco? Don't you think the Government get enough tax from you without adding cigarettes to the list? Is your outward appearance more important to you than your internal health? Do you want to go back to bad breath and stinky hair? I'm sure that's not the case Polhigg. You're a positive, determined person who has been smokefree for 57 days! You've gotten over the worst of all the phases - the initial grumps and are now tackling the next part - the break of the habit. It's time to persevere with that part and break the habit once and for all. If you don't you'll be back at square one and feeling as if you've failed. You're at a critical point here Polhigg....you either sit and smoke or throw them away (take them to poor old Brighton and bury them in a sand volcano!) and carry on. Really think about it Polhigg - we're here for you and all hoping that you stick with us. ♥

Hey Minty fresh how long do you think the after shocks will go on?? That has to be very scary, I have trouble sleeping now , with out worry that may have another quake. It would sure raise the stress leval. Hopefuly this wont cause the people that quit to start smoking to releave the stress. hang in there and will be thinking of all I cant remember who said this so can credit him but this fits " these are the times that try mens souls"

Who knows cojy!!! It's a bit like being on a boat and hoping for a lasting calm - the storm has died down but we are getting pretty regular waves!!! THEY (?) have said that we were due another biggie within 38 hours and we've passed that timeframe. Who knows! I know that some people have picked up the cigarettes again - but I believe that it will be short lived - once this is all over with they'll be back on the wagon with gusto!!! For newbies quitting it is hard enough getting through the initial times of quitting without being thrown a curve ball such as this......they'll all be fine I know. With all of our support they'll be back on track before you know it. ☺

Hi there Lisa - hope you've had a chance to hug your lad. Days like this do appear and if you can push though this without smoking then you'll be learning a huge lesson. If you give in then the lesson will be lost. Stick with it Lisa - kids are forgiving creatures and your 4 year old will thank you when he's 10 and you have the energy and enough puff to run around and kick a ball with him. Try and turn a blind eye and count to 10 before reacting to his 'mishaps and misadventures'. Tomorrow's another day Lisa. Forget being house proud and start to taking it easier on yourself. Remember you're quitting first and foremost for all of the health benefits that there are and secondly so your kids will have a healthy mum around and a granny for their kids. This is just a phase Lisa - push through it whilst remaining smokefree and it will soon come to an end. Have you thought of using Rescue Remedy? It may help take the edge off of fractious moments. ☺

Why Christchurch

Hey guys havnt been on since friday, was without power half day on sat, woke up to stuff flying around my bedroom my tv getting thrown to the ground, wondering how my kids were. My son came to my room as soon as it had stopped i tried to get out of my bed to get to my kids but could not even stand!!! My 10mth old daughter slept through the whole thing lucky her!!! Well i had been 3 days non smoking at that stage and had already been through crap and then that i have to say i am now on monday and have had 4 ciggies which i do congratulate myself for cause i do have a whole packet here and have been trying to control myself... Well will just get back on board and get rid of packet and start again it so frustrating that when i try and give up this bloody happens...........

I hope that you're feeling a little more settled now - I know it's not back to normal but it's better than it was and the Sun is shining. Great day for catching up on the washing ...the wind is there too.

Talk more later. Be good and remember to boil the water!! What area are you in? I'm in Spreydon.

HI Chrissie. See how powerful that demon nicatine is he will do any thing to get you back. :-) but you can just get on board again all is not lost. I have been there and done that. Once I was over a year and a friend gave me a cigar and before you know it i was back on cigarettes and quit many times and then got right back on so when you get back to normal just start over no big lose that you cant over come.

Ill give up again, I will have to make another quit date and try again, Im very disappointed, but im tired with lack of sleep and cant get down about it at the moment. Tomorrow I quit!

Hi there everyone, I have proved that I cannot quit by myself, I am 24 and have been smoking for 8 years, I have tried to quit a couple of times and always seem to make it to the 3 week mark before I reach for a cigi thinking one will be OK, but its not! I', a nursing student and hate the fact I smoke. I am meant to promote health and well being yet I'm a smoker.. its wrong. Smoking is a huge stress factor in my life as I know how bad it is for my health and my appearance so I know how better off without them I would be. My Mother passed away from breast cancer last year, and she was a smoker. I have a huge risk of developing this disease myself and yet I still smoke. I have my days where I still grieve for my Mother and those seem to be the days I take comfort in smoking. I would love some support from real people who know what this addiction is like, and I would love to offer my support to you.
Thank you
Hollie

I learnt this with ...you guys ....xx talk later ...yep a journey...as we all have xx

minty fresh minty fresh

Hi there Hollie - well done on making two really good choices, firstly setting a quit date and secondly jumping onboard the quitters wagon with the rest of us bloggers! lol It's great that you're really investigating your personal smoking habits and looking at them for what they are. I used to work in the hospital and knew lots of nurses and docs who smoked, they didn't like what they were doing either and wanted to stop - some of them did before I left there and have since found out that most of them are now smokefree - the ones who are still smoking look REALLY old. You have so many incentives to quit Hollie - you're young and so the smoking damage probably isn't visible yet (i.e. smokers lines), you have a possible health risk with the link to breast cancer, you're working in the health field and you know that you're mother would be so pleased with you if she knew that you'd thrown the cigarettes away and given yourself a chance at living a full, real, honest, fun, adventurous life. You know what Hollie that is precisely what you will be doing.......in order to succeed you have to be determined to push yourself through the 'urges' and 'cravings' despite being tempted. You are not allowed to succumb to excuses and you have to remind yourself that you are doing the best thing for YOU. Let's see if with our help you can push through the first three weeks and beyond. With determination Hollie YOU CAN. Onwards and upwards and keep on blogging ☺

Fellow Cantabrians!

Hi there all quitters - hope you're sticking with the program. Hey there fellow Cantabrians - where is the wind???? Was a bit worried as I thought we were gonna get blown off the map seeing as we didn't get shaken off - but it hasn't happened......a good sign???? Hmm we'll see.

I didn't realise there were so many bloggers from Christchurch (or Canterbury) here...so far Suzieq50, Polhigg (from Dallington?), Yas01 (Hornby) and me from Spreydon!! So guys we are spread across Chch. Have any of you ventured into town and seen the damage? Yep I did a bit of rubber necking with my camera - it's really sad. The old buildings in Sydenham have been hit quit badly - wish I could add pics on here and the building on the corner of Barbadoes and St Asaph has apparently fallen down - I have a pic of it half standing.

If you're still smoke free then well done and keep it up and if you've snuck in a pack then don't beat yourself up. All of this shaky stuff will be out of the way soon and you'll be able to get back up and carry on with your quit. Natural disasters are not just a whim! lol But they also don't go on forever...so keep your original plan in mind and re-focus when all has settled.

Wind just picking up slightly now (4.30) first time all day - but apart from that what a lovely day....a few shakes, shudders and wobbles (and that's just be doing Zumba! lol - the wind has noting to do with me....promise!).

Have a great day all - fellow Christchurch/Cantabrians - glad that you're all safe and still blogging. Great how we (as a group of people) can pull together and help eachother out. My Mum always said that disasters have the uncanny ability of pulling people together - like in the second world war when they slept in the underground stations in London - you'd be sleeping next to someone that you wouldn't spend the time of day with under normal circumstances. Just goes to show...we all need eachother really. ☺.....♥♥♥

I think the wind is with me!!!
Down in Dunedin, it is soooo windy, just waiting for my shed or roof to take off, then i will chase frantically round after them which is better than smoking.
Just coming to end of day 5 and so far so good. I am finding it really easy, this can't be right, going from 35 a day to 0. Maybe it's because i know i have u load of awesome peeps to disappoint and not just myself which is weird cause i don't really know any of u if u get my meaning. Thanks for being here anyway. :)

Hi yas01. Go easy on yourself, you have just been through a bloody scary ordeal. Its ok for us to sit here and judge, we are not in your position. I think that if I were in your position I might have given in to the temptation too. Just concentrate on looking after yourself and your family at the moment and go easy on yourself, as you said you are only human. Take carexx

Thanks horlicks, just read your blog with tears flowing down my face. Just had another big shock. They start with a big bang then rock & roll.
We are very lucky so far though we live out in Hornby no where near the city thankfully.
Will go make a cuppa at least we have power now!
Will be in touch soon, thanks xx

My thoughts are with you and everyone else from canterbury. We had quite a big one in Gisborne in 07 so can understand the stress and uncertain feelings. Stay strong everyone.
