Patches, Gum and Lozenges

Using nicotine patches, gum and lozenges for eight weeks can double your chances of quitting.

Patches, gum and lozenges work by replacing some of the nicotine you usually get from cigarettes. Withdrawal symptoms are reduced but you will still need to develop lifestyle strategies to become a non-smoker. Getting extra support and reading quit resources also helps your chances of successfully quitting.

Using patches, gum and lozenges has not been shown to cause cancer or heart disease and these products are much safer than smoking.

You can order patches, gum and lozenges online or from the Quitline ($10-20 for eight-weeks supply). The usual programme is eight weeks for New Zealand residents. These products may not be suitable for people with some medical conditions and pregnant women will need to consult their lead maternity carer before using patches, gum and lozenges.

Note: It is important to keep the patches whole and not to cut them. Download/View Quit Infosheets on patches, gum and lozenges.
