FAQ
What is Txt2Quit?
Txt2Quit is a TXT message service to help you quit smoking which runs for 26 weeks. Getting TXT messages can help keep your motivation up and give you advice and support as you quit.
Is Txt2Quit free?
Yes, if you are in NZ.
If you use nicotine patches, gum and lozenges, there will be a charge at the pharmacy of $10-20 for eight weeks’ supply.
What’s a quit day?
This is the day you will stop smoking. Txt2Quit relies on you setting a quit day to determine what message to send you. You can set a quit day up to one month from today’s date.
What is a blackout period?
A blackout is an optional period of time up to two hours long when we won’t send you any Txt2Quit TXTs. This can be any time between 7am and 10pm.
Sometimes the mobile networks hold up messages by mistake and they may arrive during your blackout or during the night. We can’t control this and apologise if it happens.
Why do you need all my personal details?
We need your name and postal address to send you a letter, wallet guide, and other useful material when you first join Txt2Quit. Other contact information is used to confirm your online account and send you TXT messages.
If you order patches, gum and lozenges, you’ll be asked a few questions about your smoking habit to help us send you the right dose.
When will the TXT messages start?
After you register, we will send you a confirmation text. You must reply YES for the programme to start
Your TXT messages will start the day after you reply to the confirmation text.*
* If you have set your Quit Day more than two weeks in advance, there will be a delay in your messages starting.
If you haven’t received any TXT messages and are concerned, please let us know by calling 0800 778 778 or reporting a problem at www.txt2quit.org.nz
I’m having technical problems, what do I do?
Not getting your Txt2Quit TXTs or other issues? Let us know about any problems you have with Txt2Quit by reporting a technical problem here.
How many messages will you send me?
Before you quit
Up to 2 messages per day before your quit date to help you prepare. This is the pre-quit stage and you will not be able to use texts such as CRAVE, SLIP UP, RELAPSE. The reason why? During this time the system identifies you to be preparing to be quit, but not quit yet until you reach your quit date. Once you reach your quit date, all texts will be recognised.
After you quit
Three a day for the first month, then they slow down to three a week after that.
If you get a craving or have a slip up, TXT us and we’ll send you a message to help beat the craving and get back on track.
How will I know when I get a Txt2Quit message?
Messages sent from Txt2Quit all start with T2Q.
I think I haven't received some messages?
You may be unable to receive text messaging in some geographical areas due to unavailable or poor network coverage of service by your service providers.
You may not receive your Txt2Quit messages if your mobile phone is turned off at the time your txt messages are scheduled to be sent to you.
What is a crave or slip up message?
These are extra support messages you can request when you are having a craving or have slipped up and smoked again. You can TXT CRAVE, CRAVE ALCOHOL, CRAVE STRESS, CRAVE BORED, or SLIP UP to 3111 and get a response to help you go forward and stay quit.
Is there a limit to the crave and slip up messages?
You can get a max of 50 crave messages. This is a total combination of all slip up and crave type messages including crave, crave alcohol, crave stress, and crave bored.
You’ll get a message when you only have 10 of these messages left. You’ll get another message when you have run out.
I’ve started smoking again, now what?
If you’ve gone back to regular smoking and still want to quit, TXT RELAPSE to 3111. You’ll receive four weeks of tailored messages to get you back on track.
Will you send me advertising or spam?
No. We won’t send you any advertising or any TXT messages you haven’t asked for. If you don’t like the messages, you can stop Txt2Quit anytime by TXTing STOP or calling 0800 778 778.
You sent me a poll, what is that for?
About every two weeks we’ll send out a poll or quiz just to help keep your hands distracted and doing something else. You can check the results at txt2quit.org.nz or on your quitter community home page.
What’s with the TXTs asking if I’m quit?
At four, 12, and 22 weeks through the programme, we will send you a TXT to ask if you are still quit. Your honest response will help us to make the programme more effective.
If you reply NO to these TXTs this will not affect your programme. You can get more support to quit by calling Quitline 0800 778 778 or visit www.txt2quit.org.nz.
I don’t like getting so many TXT messages, what can I do?
Call the Quitline on 0800 778 778 and we can reduce the number of messages that you receive.
How do I stop Txt2Quit?
TXT stop to 3111 or call 0800 778 778 and we’ll take you off Txt2Quit.
